Weekend Workouts
This weekend turned out to be pretty busy even though nothing was really planned! Go figure. We got in a good 12.5 mile run on Saturday morning, with less then 3 months until the marathon we have to really stay strict with our long runs, even if they are scheduled the morning after a late night out. Ouch! We ran on the Raleigh Greenway, we picked it up behind Crabtree Valley Mall and I thought it would take us out a good distance but we had to do a couple of laps around Shelley Lake to get the mileage up as well as tacking on a mile at the end. So it wasn’t my favorite since I didn’t have a definite route planned out. I find that helps me mentally prepare for the long run if I know what exactly is the midway point. But whatever we made it through without minimal damage, though I don’t think I will have Mexican food the night before a long run, just saying :) I had prepared a bowl of overnight oats so when we got home I just chopped a peach and made some chocolate milk for a refueling breakfast. It hit the spot! After a shower I realized how exhausted I was from a late night, early morning and long run, so I curled up in bed and napped for 90 glorious minutes. I felt like a million bucks when I woke up. But then my stomach felt like I had a huge rock in it. This happened a couple weeks ago as well. So I had some yogurt hoping it would calm it down a bit. Scottie planned for us to meet one of his friends at The Roast Grill for some hot dogs but at that moment hot dogs were not on my mind. But I didn’t want to make us late so I grabbed some water and sipped on that while we drove downtown. Luckily I started feeling better once we got there and after standing outside a few minutes I was feeling much better. By the time I was into my first dog I was 100% cured, I guess I needed protein!
Sunday morning we were both sore but we agreed we needed an open water swim and a bike ride before our 3rd tri of the season this Saturday. Sunday was supposed to be super hot but we weren’t moving terribly fast so we finally arrived at Jordan Lake around 9:30am. The water was super choppy but I figured this would just be more practice in a less then ideal swimming situation. We both had a pretty good swim in, considering the chop and some other swimmers that I was trying to not run into :) I think in total we did about 750 meters or so, I should figure out the exact distance as I really like this swim. We then toweled off and hopped on the bikes for what I thought would be an easy ride but we ended up doing about 22 miles and I was wiped out! It started to get quite hot and I had not had a large enough breakfast to fuel the swim and run (I only had a Green Monster smoothie before we left) and I wish I would have brought something more substantial for the ride. But I made it through without too much complaining and was happy when we were done. After a nice long shower to wash off the lake scum and some leftover bacon and pineapple pizza I was ready for another 30 minutes power nap (so rare! I never nap!)
So today we are both quite sore from our long workouts so we will take it easy this week in preparation for our race. I still plan to run 2 times this week and try to get in two swims. We need to get in a 9 mile run this weekend, so may have to do a very easy run on Sunday, Scottie will be thrilled to hear about this!
