OBX Marathon Part 1
Friday morning Scottie and I were able to take our time and pack at our leisure and head out. I felt like absolute crap Thursday night, so much so that I was in tears because I was so mad that after all of this work I was sick. I had chicken soup for dinner and NyQuil for dessert so I tucked in just before 11pm. I tried my best to sleep in and then got up had coffee and breakfast and then packed everything up. With the Rabbit at full capacity we were off just after lunch. We arrived in Nags Head around 3:30pm so we drove around for a bit, realized we forgot/lost Bella’s leash so Scottie had his first trip to the Dollar Store (can you imagine!) to get one, found our beach house and let the dogs out for a potty break, then picked up our keys.
The beach house was really perfect, not too big but enough room for 4 adults and 2 dogs to move around. Mom and Dad arrived about 30 minutes later and after relaxing for a bit we decided to go out for dinner. We ventured out to Awful Arthur’s for drinks and seafood. It was great food and ofcourse great company, a perfect start to the weekend. I took more NyQuil that night since I was still rather stuffy but thankfully not as achey.
Saturday we were up again with the dogs, we went for a 30 minute walk which was really nice. The temperature was perfect out and it was beautiful scenery. Once my parents were up I made coffee and Mom and I sat outside and enjoyed the weather and the scenery. Dad and Scottie joined us and it was just perfect! I really loved being able to do that! We finally got dressed and made our way to the race Expo. Because this was a smaller marathon (compared to the NYC marathon where there are 44k runners there were only about 6k runners for the 8k, 1/2 and full marathon) I knew the expo wouldn’t be as large. Once we figured out the “system” we picked up our number, our shirts and our “Booty Bags” which had some freebies in it. We walked around a bit but didn’t find much in terms of samples or free stuff, just clothing and shoes. We decided to trek out and see the course.
We started at the drop off point and then attempted to drive the course but after loosing the course around mile 4 we decided to go to lunch instead! We went to Rundown Cafe which is a family favorite. I decided it was important to carb load so I got the sesame noodles with chicken- YUM! I wanted to lick the bowl! After lunch we decided to walk around the outlet shops a bit before heading home to relax. In true James style, Mom broke out the appetizers; chips and salsa, crackers, cheese and apple. I wasn’t terrible hungry for dinner but knew I needed to eat dinner so Mom and I made a sausage lasagna and a veggie lasagna. We ended up with a Laverne and Shirley moment and burned some of the veggie lasagna but we were able to salvage it. To be honest I was getting rather nervous for the race so it took all I could to eat dinner. Luckily I had the realization that if Oprah could run a marathon I certainly could! Seriously, I was running through all of the celebrities that have run marathons and I figured if Katie Holmes could do it I could. Hey whatever works right. It certainly put my mind at ease. I tried to get to bed early, no cold medicine since I was worried it would completely dry me out, so I had to tough it out with Breath Right nasal strips and a mentholated inhaler. I think I fell asleep around 1am, but I knew adrenaline would get me up and out in the morning.

Oh man, totally sucks about you being sick before your big race. (I can totally relate!). Good idea about the Nyquil. Rest is the best in that scenario. Okay, are all restaurants in the OBX named Awful and Rundown???
